What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a natural mineral used to keep smiles cavity-free year-round. Known as “nature’s cavity fighter,” it is commonly found in city water, food, soil, and toothpaste. When applied to tooth enamel, the hard outer layer that offers protection against decay, fluoride penetrates and creates a shield that strengthens teeth.

Your teeth are likely exposed to fluoride every day when you brush, eat certain foods, and drink tap water. However, you may still not be getting enough to protect your smile adequately. This is why fluoride treatment remains an available treatment we can provide during your dental checkup.

How Does Fluoride Treatment Work?

Fluoride is applied to a patient’s teeth

Dr. Shahrestany will begin by thoroughly cleaning your teeth to remove any existing plaque and tartar. This includes flossing and polishing all surfaces to ensure a healthier canvas for fluoride application. Once she is finished, she will use a small, handheld brush to gently apply the topical fluoride to the surfaces of your teeth. After completely coating the surfaces, the fluoride will then be left to do its work.

It will penetrate the enamel, create a protective shield against tooth decay, and strengthen this outer layer. Many dentists also refer to this process as remineralization of existing enamel.

You will be instructed not to eat or drink anything for a designated amount of time after fluoride is applied. This ensures it can deliver maximum protection and keep your teeth in better shape between dental appointments.

Who Benefits From Fluoride Treatment Most?

In most cases, children are the primary demographic for fluoride treatment because of their novice brushing and cleaning habits. However, young smiles are not the only ones that can benefit from regular fluoride application. Adults and individuals who are part of the following can expect positive results:

  • Those who are receiving chemotherapy or radiation
  • Those with extreme tooth sensitivity
  • Those with highly acidic or sugary diets
  • Those who have old fillings that need replacement
  • Those with dental crowns
  • Those who are taking multiple medications
  • Those who struggle with dry mouth
  • Those with gum recession
  • Those receiving orthodontic treatment
