What Happens At the dentist if You Haven’t Been in a While?
January 27, 2026

If it seems like it’s been ages since your last dental exam and cleaning, it’s understandable that you might be a little nervous about returning. The good news, though, is that there’s nothing to be afraid of. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect to happen at your next preventive check-up, and why there’s no need to be scared to return!
Checking In
Be sure to arrive at your dental appointment at least 15 minutes early so you have time to check in, fill out forms, and get comfortable before your exam, and so that none of these administrative tasks cut into your treatment time.
Dental Cleaning
Once you’re settled, a member of the dental team will take you to the exam room to get comfortable. Then, your teeth will be professionally cleaned. Keep in mind that if it’s been a while since your last cleaning, this step may take longer than usual, but it’s very important to get your teeth as plaque-free as possible to prevent cavities and gum disease. Plus, your teeth will look dazzling when they’re done!
X-Rays
Now that your teeth are sparkly clean, you’re ready for your closeup. Well, your teeth are, anyway, and you’ll next have dental X-rays taken. Typically, your dental insurance will cover one set per year. Your dentist will use these images during your exam to look for any problems that may be hiding beneath the surface of your gums, and to ensure that your teeth and jaw are healthy and strong.
Oral Cancer Screening
Now your dentist will provide you with a lifesaving oral cancer screening. This is completely painless and just takes a few minutes. Did you know there are about 54,000 new cases of oral cancer diagnosed each year, and about 80 percent of those are diagnosed during routine dental check-ups that include oral cancer screenings?
Oral Exam
Finally, your dentist is ready to check your teeth, gums, and jaw during the dental exam. She is looking for any problems that may not be apparent on your X-rays, as well as how well your jaw functions. If everything is in good condition, your appointment will be concluded and your team will escort you to check out, where you can book your next six-month preventive appointment. If you have any issues that require treatment, they will be happy to book that visit, too!
Remember, it’s normal to be a little nervous about returning to the dentist if it’s been a while since your last exam and cleaning, but your dentist isn’t here to judge- she is here to ensure that your teeth and gums are in good health, so don’t be afraid to come back. Your smile will thank you!
