Overcoming the Ouch: 6 Ways to Feel Better After Starting Invisalign

Patient frustrated with their Invisalign aligner

Starting Invisalign is a big step toward a straighter smile, but the first few days can be a little tender. Still, don’t panic! Aligner discomfort is completely normal, especially when you first begin treatment or switch to a new set. Luckily, there are a few easy tricks you can use to ease the transition and keep your smile on track with less pain. Here are six tried-and-true tips to help you feel better fast.

1. Just Stick with It

The worst thing you can do when aligners feel uncomfortable is take them out. It may seem counterintuitive, but Invisalign works best when you wear your trays for the full 20–22 hours a day. Removing them too often can not only delay your progress, but it can also make it harder for your mouth to adjust.

If you’re tempted to take them out, just remember that the discomfort means they’re working!

2. Keep Your Smile Cool

Sipping on cool water can help numb sore areas and ease inflammation. Alternatively, you can apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15-minute intervals if you have sensitive teeth. These are quick ways to reduce swelling and calm irritated gums.

3. Eat Softer Foods the First Few Days

Tender teeth don’t play well with crunchy snacks or chewy meals. For the first couple of days with new aligners, stick to softer foods like:

  • Yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Smoothies (enjoyed with a spoon, not a straw!)

You can return to your normal diet once your teeth adjust.

4. Try Orthodontic Wax

If a sharp edge or rough spot is irritating your tongue or cheeks, a small dab of orthodontic wax can create a protective barrier. You can find it at most drugstores, and it’s safe to use with Invisalign trays. Just make sure you change it regularly and clean your trays!

5. Switch to New Trays Before Bed

Whenever possible, change to your next set of aligners right before going to sleep. This gives your mouth several hours to adjust while you rest, so you might even sleep through the worst of the soreness!

6. Use Over-the-Counter Pain Medication

A dose of ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce swelling and relieve soreness. Just be sure to follow all directions and check with your dentist if you have any concerns.

Does Invisalign hurt? Adjusting to Invisalign can be uncomfortable at first, but it gets better fast. With a little patience and these helpful tips, you’ll be well on your way to a straighter, healthier smile. And when you see those final results, you’ll know the discomfort was totally worth it!
